Senior Chinese military official has accused US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of acting in concert to sow controversy and division in the Asia-Pacific region.

Speaking to reporters at a conference of senior military officials from around the region, Lt. Gen. Wang Guanzhong, the deputy chief of staff of the People's Liberation Army, said that a speech by Hagel, which followed one by Abe, was 'full of threats and intimidating language'.

According to the New York Times, General Wang was reportedly mostly annoyed with Hagel, who accused China of coercive tactics in its many maritime disputes with its neighbors.

General Wang also criticized Abe's speech, which contained several veiled criticisms of China. He said that Hagel and Abe appeared to be "singing in duet," the report added.
