Authorities in China have reportedly placed a prominent Tibetan writer under house arrest after she was invited to the American embassy in Beijing.

Tsering Woeser and her husband, author Wang Lixiong, have been placed under house arrest in Beijing for two days after returning from a trip to North China, reports the BBC.

Woeser is a winner of the U.S. State Department's International Women of Courage Award.

Woeser said the security personnel had declined to say why she was being held.

But in Facebook post, she said she believed it was because she had been invited to an official dinner at the U.S. Embassy.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is currently in Beijing for the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue, and it was not known whether he was due to attend the dinner.

Kerry is known to be an admirer of Woeser's writings.
