Chinese GP grid girl downplays Hamilton's Champagne spraying incident

A Chinese Grand Prix grid girl, on whom race winner Lewis Hamilton had directly sprayed Champagne while celebrating his victory, has downplayed the incident after the reigning Formula One champion was accused of sexist bullying. e Briton, who clinched his second victory of the season on Sunday, popped the cork and sprayed the Champagne directly at an unsuspecting hostess.

Following the incident, Object, a campaign on media sexism, had criticized the two-time world champions' way of celebration as they accused him of abusing grid girl's position.

Reflecting on the incident, gird girl Liu Siying said that it lasted for only one or two seconds, adding that she didn't think too much about it, Stuff.co.nz reported.

Siying, who is a 22-year-old graduate of the Shanghai Institute of Visual Art, further said that some foreign media are more sensitive about the topic than local media.

The incident sparked scathing remarks with one of the leading newspaper's in the United Kingdom observing that Hamilton had been 'ungallant' in his celebration, while another branded the Formula One champion as a 'hooligan'.
