Australian captain Michael Clarke has expressed optimism over his side's chances in the first Test of the winter Ashes series at the Gabba, saying that Australia wants to enhance their proud record at the Gabba, which he branded as their 'own turf'.

According to News.com.au, Clarke said that he has been looking forward to getting together in Gabba for the first Test of the winter for a decade as it is a special feeling for him, adding that playing in their own 'backyard' is an advantage because of their familiarity with the conditions.

Stating that the extra pace and bounce at the Gabba makes for 'exciting cricket', Clarke further said that if a bowler bowls well in the pitch, there is always some encouragement whether he bowls pace or spin, which was evident in his teammate Nathan Lyon's form during his two Tests at the ground.

Clarke also said that Gabba is a great place to score runs for a batsman, adding that a player never forgets the first time he walks into the Gabba change rooms and put his gear down, following which he realises the sense of belonging to the team.
