Comprehensive global response needed to tackle terrorism: PM Modi

Dubbing the recent terrorist attack in Paris as 'barbaric' and 'dreadful', Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called for a comprehensive global response to tackle the universal problem of terrorism.

Speaking at the G20 Working Lunch on Development and Climate Change, the Prime Minister said that the Paris attack has served as a stark reminder of the 'dark force' that the world is facing.

"Today, we meeting the tragic shadow of dreadful acts of terrorism, united by a sense shock, pain and outrage. We are united in condemning the barbaric attacks in Paris this week; and, the recent bombings in Ankara and Lebanon. We share the sorrow of Russia for the lost lives in the fallen aircraft in Sinai," he said.

"It is a major global challenge of our times. It not only takes a tragic toll of lives, it also extracts a huge economic cost and threatens our way of life," he added.

The deadly attack reportedly began in the French capital at a soccer stadium where a match was underway as explosions set off. Simultaneously, terrorists armed with AK-47s and bombs began attacking in different sites throughout the city.

A bloodbath was reported from the Bataclan concert hall where around 100 people were killed as terrorists opened fire for 15 minutes and even shot hostages at point blank range.

Including the massacre at the concert, over 120 people have reportedly been killed in different sites in the attacks.

Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan welcomed leaders of the world's 20 top economies, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to the G-20 summit being held at the Regnum Carya Hotel Convention Center here today.

The town of Belek, where the summit is being held, has been declared a high-security zone following the audacious terror attacks in Paris Friday night. Over 12,000 security personnel, drone detection equipment and mobile cameras have been placed for surveillance of the area.
