The Congress Party on Sunday welcomed President Pranab Mukherjee's call for preserving pluralism and multiplicity in the country and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to follow the 'rajdharma'.

Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit linked the President's perspective with that of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's advice to Modi in 2002 post the Godhra riots.

"I think what the President has said is a great reminder for the government. If you remember in a similar way, Vajpayee had said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was the chief minister of Gujarat then, to follow 'rajdharma'," Dikshit told ANI.

"But the problem is that this Prime Minister can't hear anything against him, which is beyond his limited understanding," he added.

Applauding the President for his efforts, Dikshit pointed out that the present regime was contravening every norm under which modern Indian nation was built.

"It is the role of the President to always keep a check on the government and ensure that the Constitution is followed in its spirit," he added.

President Mukherjee had yesterday said that India has thrived despite all its diversities because of assimilation and tolerance.

"Multiplicity is our collective strength which must be preserved at all costs. It finds reflection in the various provisions of our Constitution," he said.
