Police on Saturday arrested Congress candidate for Saharanpur, Imran Masood, who openly threatened to hack to pieces Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

A criminal case was registered against Masood on Friday after a video of him threatening Modi went viral on the web.

An FIR (First Information Report) accused Masood, 40, of violating the election code of conduct.

Masood was arrested by the Saharanpur police of Uttar Pradesh and police personnel including district Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and other senior officials were present during the arrest.

"We received a video footage featuring him on the basis of which an FIR was lodged. He has been arrested and investigation is on into the matter," said Manoj Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Saharanpur.

Many Congress leaders condemned the usage of scornful words by the Congress candidate.

However, spokesperson of BJP, Meenakshi Lekhi had earlier vouched that the party will see to it that Masood's candidature is cancelled.

Arousing a fresh embarrassment to Congress, the party candidate, who is contesting from Saharanpur constituency, resorted to making a scathing attack on Modi.
