The opposition stalled proceedings in the Lok Sabha on Friday over a demand that the remarks made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Sakshi Maharaj on Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse were completely unacceptable and untenable, and demanded an unconditional apology from the former as well as from the Prime Minister.

After much chaos over the BJP MP calling Mahatma Gandhi's assassin, Nathurm Godse, a 'Patriot', the former retracted and then apologised in the Lok Sabha.

"I respect Bapu and also the parliament, the opposition is raising non-issues. I take back my words," said Maharaj.

"I am taking back my words, if some people were hurt then I regret it,' he added.

Earlier in the day, Congress members were also seen protesting outside the Parliament, near Mahatma Gandhi's statue, while chanting slogans of

'Hey Ram! Gandhi ke Qaatil ko diya samman'.

Nathuram Godse, a right-wing activist, had shot the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, thrice in the chest at point blank range on January 30, 1948. He was hanged in November 1949.
