Political parties like the Congress and DMK have urged the Centre and Tamil Nadu governments to put pressure on Sri Lanka, on the problem of arrest of fishermen and seek a remedy once and for all.

TNCC president BS Gnanadesikan said, "Fishermen of both countries have to sit and talk to resolve the issue. Both governments of Tamil Nadu and of India need to put pressure. We have to find out some remedy for this to close the issue."

Meanwhile, DMK spokesperson, T.K.S Elangovan charged Sri Lanka of showing no courtesy to India's friendly posture towards that nation.

"There is no change in the attitude of the government even though there is change in the government at centre. India says that Sri Lanka is a friendly nation. They don't respect India, this is something surprising. India is supporting Sri Lanka, but it is not supporting India. One terrorist came through Sri Lanka to India last time from Pakistan. But Sri Lanka did not reveal this," Elangovan said.

"They are continuously arresting our fisherman which is absolutely wrong and we have been opposing for a long time and therefore India must take strong steps against these atrocities by the Sri Lankan Navy. Therefore, strong step needs to be taken from India's side. That is what we expect and are demanding," he added.

Lankan Navy have reportedly arrested fifty Indian fishermen from Nagapattinam and Karaikal, second time in a row this week, for allegedly fishing near the Lankan coast.
