Left and Congress leaders have expressed shock over the brutal rape of a tribal woman by ten persons, including her husband in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, and the fact that she was forced to drink urine in front of her minor son, and paraded naked over a land dispute.
"It is very shocking, it is a heinous crime. How to prevent such crimes, we will have to think how our law works in our country. Even the prime minister has been talking about this, and the president's address was very categorical that there should be zero tolerance to the crime against women and children," CPI leader Raja said.
"It is shocking that such things keep happening with tribal and Dalit women. Government should take some strong measures to prevent such crimes and once the crimes take place, it should see that law enforcement authorities do job on their time and provide justice," he added.
Congress leader Shobha Oza said, "In Madhya Pradesh there is complete jungle raj, there is no rule of
law. In each passing there are cases of rape taking place. Noone is afraid of anything. The statement of the home minister is very unfortunate too."
The incident reportedly took place three days ago in Bhiali Kheda village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Piplod police station. The victim reported the matter to the police on June 13 after her family brought her to the Khandwa District Hospital for treatment.
There is nation-wide outrage over the string of sexual assault incidents against women. The issue has come into fresh focus following the gang rape and murder of two teenage cousins, whose bodies were found hanging from a tree in Badaun District of Uttar Pradesh.
