Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Husain Dalwai on Monday pitched for reservations for Muslims after he and his delegation had met Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.

"We met the top leadership of the state, and have said to him (the chief minister) that we welcome that the Marathas are getting reservation. At the same time, we also pointed out that there are farmers and labourers in the unorganised sector who must also get some aid and are out of bounds of development. But the Muslim community has remained backward more than the dalit and adivasis according to the Sacchhar committee, and therefore, there must be talk of their development," Dalwai said.

"We had earlier never spoken about reservation but if the Marathi society is getting that then there are people whose conditions is much worse in the Muslim community who too should get reservation," Dalwai added.

Following the Rane Committee's recommendation for 20 per cent quota for Marathas in government jobs and educational institutions, the Congress-NCP government will take a decision next week.

Maharashtra Industries Minister Narayan Rane had last week said in the legislative council that the government will announce 20 percent reservation for Marathas after June 20, the last date of election code of conduct.
