Congress Member of Parliament Rasheed Masood has been disqualified from the Rajya Sabha after being convicted in a corruption case.
This came after a Delhi court had on September 19 sentenced the 66-year-old for four years in jail on corruption charges in connection with the MBBS scam.
His conviction was the first after the Supreme Court struck down a provision in the electoral law that provided immunity to MPs and MLAs from immediate disqualification.
As Minister of Health in the V P Singh Government between 1990 and 1991, Masood was held guilty of fraudulently nominating undeserving candidates to MBBS seats allotted to Tripura in medical colleges across the country from the central pool.
