The Congress Party on Monday criticised the BJP-led NDA Government for questioning the veracity of citizenship of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and said raising such a question is churlish.

Deputy Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Anand Sharma, on Monday said the ruling dispensation is scared of the Gandhi scion.

Sharma said the Congress vice-president comes from the family of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

"It shows the government is scared of Rahul Gandhi. Why are they indulging in these things? Why are they calling him names? The moment Rahul Gandhi says anything, the government does a head stand. It shows that Rahul Gandhi is raising effective issues which are people's issues," he said.

The Congress vice-president today appeared unfazed after a notice was served on him over his citizenship and his party accused the Centre of carrying out personal attacks to divert attention from more urgent issues.

"We will deal with that," Gandhi told reporters when asked about a show-cause notice issued by the ethics committee of Parliament, asking whether he had declared himself a British citizen to float a firm in the UK.
