The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said that consular access sought by the UK High Commission to Christian Michel, the middleman in the AgustaWestland VIP chopper deal is under examination.
"The MEA received a request from the UK High Commission seeking consular access in the case. The matter at this point of time is being examined within the Ministry and will be referred to the British High Commission very soon," MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said at a press conference here.
Michel was extradited to Delhi from UAE on Tuesday night and a court here on Wednesday remanded him to five-day Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody.
Hailing the extradition, Kumar said that the development is an "example of cooperation between India and UAE." "His extradition is a reflection of cooperation between India and UAE as a close strategic partnership," he added.
The MEA spokesperson also informed that Michel was extradited to India after following all due process and exhausting all judicial procedures.
Michel is a citizen of Britain and an alleged middleman in Rs. 3,600 crore helicopter deal.
