England skipper Alastair Cook and Joe Root on Friday put up a strong batting performance as they gave the hosts a solid start on the opening day of the second Test here at Old Trafford.

Electing to bat first, Cook led from the front as he smashed 15 boundaries in his 105-run knock to equal the Graham Gooch's record of 11 Test centuries, most by an England captain.

After losing opening partner Alex Hales for mere 10 runs, Cook was well supported by Joe Root as the duo shared a huge 185-run partnership for the second wicket to put the hosts in a commanding position.

Fast-bowler Mohammad Amir, however, brought some respite to Pakistan by first dismissing Hales with a scorching in-swing delivery before breaking a solid stand of Cook and Root at the stroke of Tea.

At the time of reporting, England stood at with Root and Gary Vince batting at their respective scores of 103 and one.

Pakistan are currently leading the four-match Test series 1-0 following their historic 75-run win over England in the opening match at Lord's.
