Costa Rica beat Uruguay for the first time in their history in their history in their Group D FIFA World Cup opener.

Costa Rica reportedly fought back in the second-half of the match at the Estadio Castelao to beat Uruguay 3-1, thanks to the goals scored by Joel Campbell, Oscar Duarte and Marco Urena.

According to the BBC, Uruguay's striker Edinson Cavani put his side ahead from a penalty in the first half as Oscar Tabarez's side looked in control for the opening 50 minutes.

However, with Uruguay's defender Maximiliano Pereira being sent off in injury time for a spiteful challenge on Campbell, Costa Rica turned the match around in the second half to take their side to victory.

This was reportedly Costa Rica's first World Cup victory since 2002, and only their fourth in the tournament's history, against a Uruguay side missing the injured Luis Suarez.

Costa Rica currently top the Group D with Italy defeating England 2-1 and Colombia defeating Greece 3-0 in the group, the report added.

Uruguay face an uphill battle currently to qualify for the last 16 in the World Cup, the report further added.
