The Toronto City Council has voted 37 to 5 to ask its embattled mayor Rob Ford to take a leave of absence.

The council does not have the power to force Ford, who admitted to buying illegal drugs and smoking crack cocaine, from his post.

According to CNN, Ford insisted that he was going nowhere and apologized profusely throughout the day, firmly refusing to step down from his job.

The council meeting comes more than a week after Ford admitted smoking crack cocaine.

Just days after that admission, a new video showed Ford threatening to kill someone.

Ford has further confessed to the council, saying that he has purchased illegal drugs within the past two years, while he was in office.

Ford said he has been a good mayor and that voters will decide during next year's election whether to keep him, the report said.

Despite the admission of drug use and of heavy drinking, Ford flatly denied that he is addicted to alcohol or drugs, it added.
