Voting for bypolls in Bihar and West Bengal began on Sunday morning amidst high security.

In Bihar, the bypoll is underway in Maharajganj for a Lok Sabha seat. Over 14 lakh 98 thousand voters are eligible to exercise their voting rights.

There are six candidates in fray. The by-election is being held due to death of RJD member Uma Shankar Singh. The counting of votes will be held on June 5.

The bypoll in Bihar is being viewed as a major battle between Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The RJD has fielded Prabhunath Singh as its candidate, and during the campaign in the area, Lalu had targeted the state government, claiming that not all was well in the BJP-JDU alliance.

Nitish, during his campaign rally, had sought the votes of the people on the basis of the work done by the government.

In West Bengal, the voting is underway for bypolls in Howrah. The bypoll assumes significance as the Trinamool Congress is facing an election for the first time after the Saradha chit fund scam.
