The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on Wednesday gave approval for the acquisition of defence equipment worth Rs 2700 crore.
The nod was given at a meeting of the DAC chaired by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
The DAC approved the procurement of three cadet training ships for the Indian Navy. The ships would be used to provide basic sea training for officer cadets, including women officer trainees.
The vessels would also be capable of undertaking hospital ship duties, providing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, besides search and rescue missions and non-combatant evacuation operations.
The objective of the DAC is to ensure expeditious procurement of the requirements of the armed forces by optimally utilising the allocated budgetary resources.
