British Prime Minister Theresa May's most senior minister, Damian Green, has resigned at her request after an inquiry found that he had made "inaccurate and misleading" statements about pornographic images found on his parliamentary computer in 2008.

A probe by the cabinet secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood found that Green's vigorous denials post a Sunday newspaper reported that "extreme" porn had been found on his computer were "inaccurate and misleading".

His departure, the third cabinet sacking in the space of two months, is a blow to the prime minister Theresa May.

It was "with deep regret and enduring gratitude for the contribution you have made over many years that I asked you to resign from the government and have accepted your resignation," the Guardian reported May as saying in a letter responding to Green's resignation.

Green, however, in his resignation letter, continued to maintain that he did not "download or view" the pornography and also labelled the allegations levelled against him as "unfounded" and "deeply hurtful."

According to the reports, the inquiry was launched in early November after Kate Maltby, a Tory activist, purported that Green had touched her knee in 2015 and then sent her a suggestive message.

Last month, Michael Fallon stepped down as defence secretary after a female journalist accused him of trying to kiss her after a lunch meeting in 2003.
