Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Barkha Shukla Singh on Thursday expressed concern over reports of the Uttar Pradesh Police blaming indecent clothing and exposure to mobile phones for the rise in rape cases.
Shukla said such statements were nothing but a reflection of a 'small mentality' that exists in the force.
According to reports, in a reply to a Right to Information (RTI) query submitted to the office of the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh Police stated that 'indecent clothing, exposure to mobile phones and too much intermingling between boys and girls' was the reason behind the increased cases of rape.
Slamming the statements, Shukla said, "Talking like this about clothes and cell phones shows that problem is in the mindset of people."
She added that incidents of rape and harassment actually decrease when women are given more freedom.
