In view of the unfortunate Shakur Basti demolition incident, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has decided to defer all demolitions till after winter.

In this regard, the DDA said that it will seek a clarification on the issue from the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

In pursuance to the orders of National Green Tribunal (NGT), Yamuna clearance programs were fixed, as no agriculture activity or any other construction is permitted in the Yamuna Flood Zone.

It is pertinent to mention here that the land falling under four villages, namely Chiragh Zanubhi, Bela, Inderpat and Chiragh Somali was temporarily leased for five years for grass cutting and grazing to the two societies, namely the Delhi Peasant's Multipurpose Co-operative Society and Jheel Khurenja Milk Producer's Society.

The leases expired in 1966 and the societies were asked to hand over the vacant peaceful possession of the land to Delhi Development Authority (DDA). The lessees were in unauthorized possession of the land and were carrying out agricultural activity in breach of terms and conditions of lease.

Therefore, eviction proceedings under public premises (PP) Act were initiated and orders of eviction were passed, after following due process of law. The eviction programs were carried out after the court upheld the eviction orders wherever appeals were filed by the occupants.

About 106 Acres of land was cleared on the demolition programs carried out on 26-27 November, 1st December and 9th December 20.
