A monitor group has said that more than 1,000 people have been killed in Kobane since the Islamic State (IS) launched an offensive in the Syrian town nearly two months ago.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights Director Rami Abdel Rahman said on Sunday that the fighting in Ain alArab had claimed the lives of 1,013 people from the beginning till last night, reported The Express Tribune.

About 609 of those killed were militants from the terror group, he said. Another 363 were members of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), 16 were Kurdish volunteers, and one was a Syrian Arab fighter who had joined the ranks of the Kurds.

Twenty four civilians were also among the dead.

The death toll excludes militants killed in U.S.-led air strikes targeting the IS.

Syrian Kurdish forces have been fighting to repel IS from Kobane, a strategic town on Syrian-Turkish border, since September 16.
