The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi visit to Bangladesh as 'historic', and said that the decades old border dispute between the two countries is on the verge of being resolved.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi Bangladesh tour is historic not only to India and Bangladesh, but also to the whole world. The border between India and Bangladesh is the fifth longest border in the world with both countries sharing over 4100 kms. This border was in dispute even before Bangladesh was created. After all these years this border dispute is on the verge of being solved. This is historic," BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told ANI.

"Sheikh Hasina's government in Bangladesh is a cooperative government and Prime Minister Modi has time and again stated that cooperation between governments will see to it that India and Bangladesh march ahead on all fronts," he added.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Dhaka on a two-day state visit to Bangladesh earlier today.

He was received by Sheikh Hasina and was also accorded a Guard of Honour on his arrival to the country.

Prime Minister Modi and his counterpart Sheikh Hasina will witness the exchange of instrument of ratification of the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in Dhaka.

Earlier, Indian Parliament had passed a constitution amendment bill and paved way for operationalisation of the 1974 India-Bangladesh Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) that provides for exchange of 161 disputed enclaves between the two countries.
