The Delhi gang rape case has affected Anoushka Shankar so much that she actually remembers her horrific past when she was sexually abused as a child.

The 32-year-old musician told BBC Radio 4 that no one she knew could help being affected by the gravity and intensity of that attack, and if it reflects with personal experiences then the impact of the story doubles.

Shankar said that she felt quite conscious as an Indian woman that there was a very unique moment happening in the country and all the attention was on the role and position of women in India.

The sitar player said that she thinks there is a class issue in India where it is assumed that similar incidents don't happen to people from upper classes or who are privileged.

She said that what shocked the nation was that the victim was a middle-class girl.

Shankar had earlier revealed that she was sexually abused as a child by a man whom her parents trusted.

The musician has responded to the attack, while trying to address its causes, with a track on her upcoming album 'Traces Of You'.
