The Delhi government on Tuesday appealed to resident doctors of the city who went on strike to resume work, adding that it has imposed the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) to ensure that they do the same.

"I had an extensive meeting with resident doctors yesterday. A total of 24 demands were agreed upon. Within seven days to three months, all their demands will be met. I appeal to all doctors to resume service," Delhi Health Minister Satyender Kumar Jain told the media.

"ESMA has been imposed in the city. We can't leave patients to die because of a strike by doctors. All their justified and unjustified demands have been agreed upon," he added.

The Delhi Government had earlier in the day given a deadline of 11 a.m. to all the resident doctors on strike to resume work with immediate effect.

On Monday, the resident doctors began an indefinite strike here demanding more rooms, cleaner environment, and better salaries and working hours.

The doctors' association had given June 21 as the deadline to respond to their demands.
