Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi today said that he was personally monitoring the progress being made to resolve 87 percent of the rapes and molestations registered against women in the national capital.
Listing out the measures taken by his department to help reduce crimes against women in city, Bassi said that every police station in the city now has a special women's help desk and almost 71per cent of cases are solved within the first week of their report.
Addressing a gathering of women here, Bassi said, "Everyday almost 200 persons are taken to hospital by us. There are 672 schools where PCR vans go and check."
Listing out the measures taken for women safety, he said, " As you can see in the year 2011, as Mrs. Kiran Gera also mentioned, after 2011 incident there was a paradigm shift in the number of cases being reported. The cases which earlier use to go unreported, started getting reported and as a process, as we have already seen, from 2012-13 there was a very sharp increase in the number of cases of molestation, rape and street harassment. They increased from 706 in 2011 to1636 in 2013. However, the numbers of cases of dowry deaths are almost similar (as they were before)."
Bassi also said, "Over 87per cent of the cases of rapes and molestation of women are personally monitored by me. Any crime happening in the city is my concern. I show my concern more than enough, particularly when it is a crime against women. I keep on monitoring it till the time it is worked out. That is why, almost 71per cent of cases are solved within the first week of their report. And almost 87per cent of cases are solved within two weeks."
"When we try to find out if the person was known to the victim, we have seen that the rate is high. They are mostly the friends, relatives, tenants, employees or co-workers. Strangers are involved in less than 5-6per cent of cases. These are the most critical cases where societal allowance is the highest," he added.
Stating his concern for women safety, Bassi said, "Crime can occur anywhere. Women safety is our priority, a number of steps have been taken, particularly after December 16 incident. Earlier we used to have 40 lines on 100 number, but now we have 100 lines on the number. We have special women dedicated helpline number 1029. Every police station in the city now has a women help desk. So, anytime a woman goes to a police station she is greeted by a woman police officer. It is not like the earlier times when in late evening and night hours there used to be no women constable."
"We have also identified few routes where women travel at night hours. The land lords and company heads are kept in touch so that the women there do not face any harassment," he added.
