Delhi polls: Record turnout of 65 percent till evening, polling still continues

The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday said that polls in Delhi witnessed a record voter turnout of 65 percent so far, and it is likely to increase as polling still continues in several booths across the state.

"The polls were incident-free, without any complications and marked by high turnout , breaking all previous records. As per the report we have received so far, the voter turnout has crossed 65 percent, while polling is still taking place in several booths. The people of Delhi especially the youth have broken all stereotypes and were forthcoming to cast their vote," Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Vijay Dev told media here today.

"As per the law, the voters who have reached the polling station before 5 p.m, are legally entitled to vote irrespective of the time, be it till 8 pm or ever more," he added.

He further revealed the polling figures of previous years, while complimenting the Delhi people and the efforts of the Election Commission in spreading awareness among the masses to exercise their right to vote.

"The 2008 assembly election figure was 57.58 percent. In 2003 the figure was 53.42 percent. While in 1998 the polling figure was 48.99 percent, and in 1993 the figure was 61.75 percent, which was considered the highest till date," he said.

The results of the Delhi polls will be announced on December 8, along with that of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram.
