Louis Van Gaal's hopes of having a top-four Premier League finish were dented after Manchester United secured a fifth spot following their convincing 3-1 victory over Bournemouth in their final match at Old Trafford.

Skipper Wayne Rooney put his side ahead in the 43rd minute of the match before striker Marcus Rashford and midfielder Ashley Young smashed two late goals in the 74th and 87th minute to hand their side with the win.

Bournemouth only managed to open their account when United's defender Chris Smalling smashed a goal in his own net at the last minute, the Guardian reported.

United, however, clinched a place in next year's Europa League, regardless of whether they win the FA Cup against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

United ended their Premier League campaign with a mere 49 league goals. It is only the third time in 42 seasons when Van Gaal's side have failed to reach 50.

Earlier, the Old Trafford Stadium was evacuated ahead of the final game between United and Bournemouth after a suspicious item was detected, which was later found to be a training device.
