Former prime minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader H.D. Deve Gowda on Sunday backed the 'unanimous' decision to elect Sitaram Yechury as the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and expressed confidence that the latter would try to reunite the Left Parties.

"Sitaram Yechury has sufficient experience. It was decided collectively and unanimously that that he will be the general secretary," Deve Gowda said.

"I have confidence that with cooperation of senior leaders he will try to re-unite the Left wing, which was earlier functioning together," he added.
