Devotees thronged the banks of river Ganga on Wednesday to take a holy dip on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti.
Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the sun into the zodiac sign of Makara rashi (Capricorn) on its celestial path. The day is also believed to mark the arrival of spring in India and is a traditional event.
"Today on Makar Sankranti, we came here for the holy dip. We come here every year," said Mukesh Pachauri, a devotee.
Another devotee, Satya Narayan Prasad Chaurasia said, "Sins are washed away when you take a holy dip on this auspicious day.
