Devout Hindus thronged temples in Ayodhya to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman, who is a central character in the Indian epic Ramayan.
The festival was celebrated with religious fervour in the birthplace of Lord Rama.
Devotees offered prayers and chanted hymns in praise of Hanuman and offered flowers and sweets at the temple.
The priests said the festival is celebrated every year on the occasion of Chithirai Poornima, observed on the full moon day in the month of Chitirai (April - May).
"It is a coincidence that the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman, 'Hanuman Jayanti' has fallen on Tuesday and another hindu festival of 'Chaitra Shukla Purnima' is also being celebrated. In Ayodhya, we are celebrating it with great pomp and show," said a priest at the temple, Gopal Rav Deshpandey.
