Condemning the brutal assault on a Sikh man in Broad Street, Birmingham, Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (DSGMC) general secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Tuesday said such attacks are a case of mistaken identity.
"The attack on Sikh youth in Birmingham is condemnable. Such attacks happen due to mistaken identity of Sikhs. I request Indian government to take firm steps to clear situation across the world," said Sirsa.
Meanwhile, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Kiranjot Singh Kaur said one doesn't expect such a crime in a place like Birmingham.
"Birmingham is a place where one does not expect hate-crime because Sikhs are living there since long time. I think reason behind this is the growing intolerance in society about what is perceived as 'others," said Kaur.
The attack on the Sikh man is being widely suspected to be a hate crime.
As per reports, a video has also surfaced where the victim is seen being punched and kicked by a man even as a crowd looks on.
The video was apparently shot by one of the persons in the crowd.
