Bangladesh has reportedly declared a Pakistani High Commission official based in Dhaka as persona non grata and has asked him to leave the country in a fresh diplomatic row.
A source said that Pakistani diplomat Mazhar Khan was accused of running an illegal Indian currency business in Dhaka and having alleged links with militants by Bangladesh's foreign ministry, reported the Dawn.
Pakistani Foreign Office Spokesperson Tasneem Aslam confirmed the incident and said that the official has reached Islamabad. She however, termed the allegations made against him "baseless" and added that the incident was "unfortunate."
The Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka sent Khan back home immediately after receiving orders from Bangladesh's ministry of foreign affairs.
Tensions between the two nations spiked after Bangladeshi police nabbed four suspected members of the Islamic State (IS) in Dhaka including a regional coordinator for the terror group who claimed that they had been trained in Pakistan.
The execution of 1971 war criminals by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government also strained the relations between the two nations.
