The Congress on Wednesday condemned Haryana Agriculture Minister O.P. Dhankar's remark that 'farmers who commit suicide are cowards' and said that arrogance of power' has got to the heads of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders.
"BJP and their leaders, arrogance of power have hit their heads. We would like to tell Modi ji that cowards are those who put farmers in such a situation and who are responsible for agrarian crisis. Kisan is the most powerful food provider of the nation. Please wake up and help the farmers, otherwise when farmers wake, the government shakes," said Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala.
Dhankar had made his controversial comment on Tuesday, and said those ending their lives did not deserve the government's support.
"Suicide is a crime. According to Indian law, suicide is a crime. A person who commits suicide runs away from his responsibilities. Such people are cowards and the government cannot stand by such cowards or criminals," he said.
