Four infants died at the government hospital in Dharmapuri, raising the death toll in the last four days to nine.

Five babies, who were reportedly suffering respiratory problems, low weight and pre-term birth, had died in the hospital last week.

Yesterday's incident occurred after three babies, who were suffering from various complications, were brought to the hospital.

"Today between 12 am to 12 noon, four deaths happened. The first one was very severe birth asphyxia, that child had been referred from a private hospital. At the time of admission itself, the male child was having a very asphyxia, which is inability to breathe properly. In spite of getting the best management possible, ventilator support, adequate warmth, adequate antibiotics, the boy succumbed to death," said Dr. Elangovan, Dean of Medicines, Dharmapuri Government Hospital.

"The second female child was a 1.6 kg pre-term birth asphyxia child. The next baby was very underweight and had some sepsis also. In spite of best management, the child passed away," he added

The Dean of Medicines assured the best possible treatment.

"Among all the four deaths, three were from outside and the fourth baby who was delivered here was also having a lot of trouble in delivery time. I request the public to not be taken by this sudden surge. All the possible treatment and best management is available here," he said.

Reports however, indicate that the hospital has 22 babies who are still facing the same problems and fears remain that the death toll may increase.
