Argentine winger Angel Di Maria has said that he would honour Manchester United's iconic number seven shirt, following a pep talk from former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Di Maria, United's record 59.7 million pounds signing, has revealed that Ronaldo told him of the significance of the number seven shirt at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo donned the number seven shirt for six years at United, joining such legends such as Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and David Beckham, and Di Maria vowed to produce performances to stand alongside those stellar names, The Mirror reported.

Di Maria said that he was aware of the importance of the number seven shirt, adding that Ronaldo had spoken to him at Real and told him how important it was.

The Argentine said that he wanted to wear this shirt and do as much for the club as Ronaldo and the others could do. He added that United also wanted him to wear it so he wants to make sure that he lives up to it.

Di Maria also said that he wasn't fazed at the price United paid for him, which shattered the previous British transfer record of 50 million pounds that Chelsea paid Liverpool for Fernando Torres in 2011.

The winger said that it doesn't bother him the fact that nearly 60 million pounds has been paid for him, adding that that is something the club chairmen have to discuss between them. Di Maria said that he has come to work for United and do the best he can.
