A Diamond Detection and Research Centre aimed at detecting synthetic diamonds has been inaugurated at the Indian Diamond Institute in Surat.

The Centre was inaugurated by the Gujarat's Finance and Civil Aviation Minister, Saurabh Patel.

"At the centre, one can check the authenticity of diamonds at nominal charges. There have been one or two cases registered with the diamond association. And, since the time these cases came in view of the association a lot of fraudulent activities have been controlled. An awareness seminar organised by the Surat Diamond Association gave a lot of information to the people," said Dinesh Navadiya, President, Surat Diamond Association.

"The credibility of the trade in the state has been affected by the import of synthetic diamonds from countries like Singapore and China," he added.

The initiative has been taken in order to check the trade of synthetic diamonds in the market.

Synthetic diamonds can be manufactured in a laboratory to the extent that they have the same properties as natural ones, raising the risk that a synthetic product could one day inadvertently end up in a luxury jeweller's showroom.
