The Home Commissioner of Nagaland, Neihu C. Thur, on Saturday said that the curfew is still on in the city a day after a mob broke into the Dimapur Central Jail, dragged out a rape accused and lynched him.
"The curfew is on. The situation is under control of the police. We are grateful to the Government of Assam for extending all support to attend to the security of the people," said Thur.
"On our part, we are ensuring strict vigilance of all non-Nagas residing in different districts. This enquiry will establish all the facts. The rally concluded peacefully and people were told to go home," he added.
A mob in Nagaland barged into the Dimapur Central Jail on Thursday afternoon, dragged out a rape accused and lynched him. Police said the mob overpowered jail security, tied up the man and dragged him for seven kilometres, thrashing him along the way. By the end, he succumbed to his injuries.
The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Syed Farid Khan, a small-time trader who dealt in scrap and used motor cars.
The Nagaland Government has reportedly suspended senior officials in Dimapur over the lynching by a mob of a rape accused.
