A new study has revealed that partners must discover their inner potential in order to make their marriage work in the 21st century.

Psychologists have said that marriages have to be more than just a mere institution for living together and raising children and the best marriages are probably better today than at any time in history because spouses are looking for something other than simply sharing the same home, the Independent reported.

The researchers said that marriages have effectively gone through three ages of development over the past three centuries and although the divorce rates have increased exponentially, the personal fulfillment of sharing one's life with their partner has increased too.

Professor Eli Finkel of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, said that married people are now looking to "find themselves" and to pursue interesting careers and other aspects of their lives that allow them to express their "inner core".

He added that the nature of what couples are expecting from their marriage expectations from their marriage has changed.
