Defending champion Novak Djokovic produced an exceptional comeback on Tuesday to beat big-serving Kevin Anderson in a pulsating five-set thriller to advance to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

The world number one Serbian had bounced back from two sets down to level when play had been suspended due to bad light on Monday.

Djokovic overcame his South African opponent 6-7 (6-8), 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 in a gruelling contest that lasted three hours and 47 minutes.

Reflecting on his performance, Djokovic said that this was one of the most difficult matches he had played at Wimbledon in his career, the BBC reported.

While lauding Anderson's 'exceptional' serve, the 28-year-old further said he was two sets down and coming back to win gives him great satisfaction and confidence for his next challenge.

Djokovic will meet ninth seed and reigning US Open champion Marin Cilic in the last eight.
