Don't vote for parties which distribute cash, liquor: Kejriwal

In a veiled attack at the Bharatiya Janata Party, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday appealed to the people of Delhi to desist from voting for any party which distributes liquor and cash.

"I would like to appeal to the people of Delhi not to vote for such party who is giving you liquor and cash. Do not vote for such party who promises ahead of the polls and after the polls say that it was a political 'jumla'," Kejriwal told media persons here.

Calling the polls a one-way contest, he said the BJP already knew that it was losing.

"BJP workers have already given up. They know they are losing; it is almost a one-way contest. I have the belief that people will vote for the party that can give you a honest politics and can end corruption from Delhi," said the AAP chief.

Earlier in the day, BJP candidate Surjeet Kumar was held following allegations of liquor distribution in the Mangolpuri constituency.

According to reports, Surjeet was travelling in his car with liquor bottles and was allegedly caught distributing them at around 3.30 a.m.

Meanwhile, polling in the single-phased legislative assembly elections in Delhi, which began at 8 a.m. today amid tight security, crossed the 35 percent mark till 1 pm.

According to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi, all arrangements are in place to ensure free and fair polling.

About 55,000 police personnel have been deployed to ensure hassle free voting. The police will also undertake patrolling in different parts of the capital to prevent the distribution of liquor, money or any other allurements.

Over 1.33 crore electorate will decide the fate of 673 candidates.

The polling is presently on at 12,177 polling stations. Of these, 714 have been declared as critical and 191 as highly critical. Voting will continue till 6 p.m. in the evening.
