German stars Borussia Dortmund have moved a step closer to the Champions League quarter-finals after beating Russian side Zenit St Petersburg 4-2 in their last-16 first-leg clash on Tuesday away at Petrovsky Stadium.

A rusty-looking Zenit, which played their last competitive game in December, faces an uphill task in Germany in three weeks, while Dortmund can start planning for the last eight in Europe after the shock 3-0 defeat at relegation-threatened Hamburg in the Bundesliga.

According to Sport24, Dortmund raced into a 2-0 lead after only five minutes after goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marco Reus, although the hosts pulled two goals back after the break from central midfielder Oleg Shatov and Hulk, who converted a penalty.

Robert Lewandowski then gave the perfect response for Dortmund as he scored twice and helped the Germans take a commanding lead home for the second leg on March 19, the report added.
