The government has transfereed Enforcement Directorate official Niranjan Singh to Kolkata.

Prior to his transfer, Singh was interrogating Punjab Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia in connection with a drugs scam case in Jalandhar.

The Enforcement Directorate had questioned Majithia on December 26 last year in connection with its probe into the alleged money laundering in the Rs 6,000-crore international drug racket case.

Majithia is the younger brother of Union minister Harsimrat Kaur and the brother-in-law of Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

The Enforcement Directorate has already registered a criminal case in connection with the matter under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Reacting to the news, Congress leader Manish Tewari termed it as an inappropriate action on the part of the NDA or the Punjab Government, saying that the officer in question should have been allowed to remain in his present post to take the investigation to its logical conclusion.

BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain, however, said that the transfer of Singh was a routine matter and had nothing to do with his role in the investigation of Majithia.

Further details are awaited.
