At least 215 Muslim Brotherhood supporters in Egypt have been charged with forming a militant group responsible for the killing of six policemen in Cairo.

According to the BBC, the country's chief prosecutor accused the group - known as the Helwan Brigades - of killing six policemen and possessing weapons and ammunition.

The report said that the police in Egypt had detained more than half of those charged.

The group was ousted from power in 2013 and was later banned by the then-army head Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Al-Sisi, who was elected president last year, continued the campaign against the brotherhood and other Islamist groups, the report added.
