Egypt's interim government has announced that the clash between Morsi supporters and security forces on Wednesday led to almost 278 deaths in the violence-hit region.

Fox News reported that Egyptian Police raided two protest camps in Cairo, which had become the flashpoints for growing unrest, leading to several casualties, including 235 civilians and 43 policemen.

According to the report, Sky News cameraman Mick Deane and Gulf News reporter Habiba Ahmed Abd Elaziz were among the dead, and over 1,400 people were wounded.

Meanwhile, President Adly Mansour has declared a month-long state of emergency and curfew in Cairo and 10 provinces, while ordering the armed forces to support the police in efforts to restore law and order and protect state facilities, the report adds.

Mohamed ElBaradei, the interim vice-president, has sent in his resignation in an apparent split with the nation's leader over increasing death toll in the government's crackdown on the political turmoil which began on July 3 with the ouster of former President Mohammed Morsi.

Meanwhile, the United States and several European leaders have criticized the recent crackdown on civilians and strongly opposed the state of emergency law in the region.
