More than 40 elephants entered a village in West Bengal on Sunday and wrought havoc, leaving residents scared.

Elephants split into herds and trampled over standing crops and vegetables in fields of Chandrakona forest range area.

Angry villagers accused the local administration of failing to provide security to them as elephants had become a menace.

"Regularly 30-40 elephants roam around in the area. They enter villages, fields and destroy crops. It is on a regular basis that the vegetables are being destroyed by them," said a villager, Sudhir Mahato.

Villagers alleged that elephants had destroyed crops worth around Rs. 2 crores in the past five days.

Forest officials often tranquilize the elephants but after a few hours they return to fields.
