Police confirmed that an England fan got his ear bitten off by another England fan in a savage attack just minutes after the team lost to Uruguay last week in their Group D World Cup clash.

The man was reportedly left with half an ear at the Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo after the match on June 19.

According to the Daily Star, the incident came to light after Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez was banned from football for four months after biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini.

Police confirmed the incident after radio pundit Stan Collymore tweeted that he had seen footage of the bloody incident and the Association of Chief Police Officers issued a statement following the former England striker's tweet.

Chief Superintendent Rachel Barber said that they were made aware during the England versus Uruguay match in Sao Paulo that an incident had taken place which resulted in a national team fan having a portion of his ear bitten off by another fan.

Barber confirmed that the victim then reported the incident to the police the following day and a number of witnesses were questioned about the identity of the attacker.
