New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum had led quickfire innings from his team, which beat England by five runs to win the first Twenty20 international at The Oval on Tuesday.
McCullum's 68 off 48 balls, including two sixes and seven fours, was the centrepiece of New Zealand's imposing 201 for four and although England had a bold stab at a target of 202, the title proved just beyond their reach, Sport24 reports.
According to the report, with the defeat, England once again lost by five runs after going down by the same margin in the ICC Champions Trophy final against India at Edgbaston on Sunday.
The hosts fielded just four players from Sunday's side in stand-in captain Eoin Morgan, Ravi Bopara, Jos Buttler and James Tredwell.
McCullum shared a second-wicket stand of 114 with opener Hamish Rutherford, man-of-the-match for his dashing 62, after Boyd Rankin struck early on his England debut to leave New Zealand one for one, the report added.
