Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Minister Dharampal Singh on Wednesday said an enquiry committee has been formed to probe the Gomti Riverfront Development project, adding that whoever comes under the scanner of this scam would be suspended on an immediate basis.

"We have formed enquiry committees for Gomti Riverfront issue and for other similar issues. We have received complaints on this issue. We have suspended an assistance connected to this issue," Singh told ANI.

Singh said that it was being ensured that the money of the farmers was not misused and the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh Government was trying to provide sufficient water for irrigational purposes.

"A number of scams are involved in this. Like a bus worth Rs. 4 crore was bought. What does it show? Water in that river was polluted. First, we will release water in Gomati river in May from Sharda River. Whichever official comes under the scanner of this scam, we will suspend them too and will initiate enquiry against them," he said.

Earlier on April 1, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a probe into former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav's pet project 'Gomati Riverfront Development'.

He enquired about the budget of the scheme, which is estimated to be over Rs. 1,000 crore and also raised questions over the 'high budgetary allocation.'

Adityanath also sought detailed information from the officers about the utilisation of funds allocated to the project and also directed the principal secretaries of all departments to check unnecessary expenditure.

Accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma, Adityanath inspected the work and directed the departments concerned to finish the remaining jobs before May.

The Gomti Riverfront Project, launched by the Samajwadi Party in 2013, aims to beautify the banks of the river as well as to channelise it.
